A couple of very successful serial entrepreneurs, based in Australia, wished to build a unique web 2.0 photo blogging portal, which would use the latest technologies to offer the best user experience to site members. The clients envisioned a site that would allow their users to print, share and archive photos, videos and stories, online, in an extremely user friendly manner. The clients were interested in a complete social network with a photo blog for users to share photos and videos on the site along with a printing store with a variety of print products for the users to be able to personalize their photos, through the site.
After initial discussions, the clients selected Pegasus InfoCorp as their long term web portal development partners, based on our vast knowledge and expertise in the ecommerce and social networking domains. The clients chose the agile methodology and preferred to hire a dedicated team of resources from Pegasus InfoCorp to work on the development of the new project.
As part of the initial releases, Pegasus InfoCorp has delivered on easy share pages for the social networking and photo blogging site which are simple to create and work with. Users have the ability to upload photos & videos in bulk and display them in a variety of sideshows and layouts with great-looking page designs. The site can send automated email updates, reminders and confirmations and also allows the users to share comments with their friends. We have developed tools to provide an interactive way for the users to organize their archived images easily and to browse their archive in various ways using AJAX enabled filters.
Pegasus InfoCorp has also developed a ‘site store’ using Zencart, securely integrated
with leading payment gateways like eWay. Most of the store products are photos
and template driven. We have developed tools for the designers to create such
products as well as a highly interactive user interface to allow users to personalize
these products with their own photos and content. The site's wide product range
includes photo prints & enlargements, photo cards & note cards, invitations & thank you cards, photo gifts & canvases, calendars & planners with creative photo transformations - 'warhol' look, painted effects for the artistic touch and a variety of fonts and color options to choose from.
In recent deliveries, Pegasus InfoCorp has integrated the site with a leading video encoding service to convert and play user’s videos in a web friendly streaming format. The site has been integrated with Amazon web services namely the cloud computing service EC2 and storage service S3. We have also integrated the site with ‘Facebook’, using Facebook Connect and other Facebook API's to share user content. We have implemented inbound email processing and email content handling scripts for easy image uploads.
Based on the client’s requirements and preferences the site is being built by customizing one of the biggest open source PHP based course management systems, ‘Moodle’. The site uses the latest Web 2.0 technologies and leading third party software, tools and integrations. It uses procedural as well as object oriented PHP 5.2 as the server side scripting language and the database uses MySQL 5.0. Pegasus InfoCorp has also used PHP based open source image processing and image manipulation classes and libraries for all the image related editing and processing on the site.
The social networking site provides a rich user experience with latest trends and effects using the advanced open source JavaScript framework Mootools and high end CSS styling. Most of the features are AJAX enabled and give the users an even slicker experience. Pegasus InfoCorp has implemented an interactive and intuitive multiple photo and video upload interface that uses advanced flash and JavaScript. To showcase the uploaded photos in professional layouts we have implemented a third party flash based image slide show on the site pages.
The site has been hosted over blade server architecture for load balancing and uses database mirroring. We have used an advance open source, distributed source and version control system Git, for the core repository. The features are well documented and published on the project forums and the wiki. We have been using systematic unit testing during development and load and stress testing tools periodically.
For the next immediate release, we are working on building interactive pages for users to create 26 page calendars, poster books, digital albums etc, an advanced integration with Facebook, integrations with other popular social networking and photo blogging portals like Picasa, Twitter, Myspace etc.
